PROPER INSTALLATION IS KEY
The only way you’re going to get the most out of your mini-split heat pump, again, is to make sure you have an expert install it. Here are just some of the factors that will go into ensuring that your installation is a successful one.
- Protect the outdoor unit – It is critical that your outdoor compressor is mounted at least two feet above ground. It should also be protected by a cover that will keep snow from the unit, but the cover cannot be installed in a way that restricts airflow. If snow is allowed to plug the evaporator, the compressor will have to work so hard to melt it that it won’t be able to heat your home properly.
- Interior mounting – The inside unit needs to be about 18 inches off of the floor for peak efficiency. Doing so will make it easier for the unit to bring in cool air to warm, and will also make it easier to reach the filters for cleaning or replacement.
- Temperature settings – A heat pump already has to work hard in a cold climate, so make its job easier. If you are going to be out of the house for awhile, set the temperature to 60 degrees. If you’ll be away for a few days or more, set it to 50 degrees. You won’t overtax the system and you’ll save a great deal of money on your heating bill.
