Do-It-Yourself Heating Repair

While the Minneapolis technicians with Blue Ox will obviously be here for you any time you have any sort of heating system problem, we also want to help save you money. We don’t want you to have to pay for a repair that you could probably handle on your own, so here are a few do-it-yourself heating repair tips. These are very basic jobs that most people could take care of safely. However, if you are hesitant at all to try this work on your own, please call a professional.

CHANGE YOUR AIR FILTER

During heating season, you should change or clean your air filter once a month to ensure proper air flow through your home. If your filter is dirty, your furnace will have to work too hard in order to make you comfortable. This will not only reduce its lifespan, it will also increase the chance that you’ll need a significant heating repair.

CHECK YOUR BLOWER

Your furnace blower is likely powered by a V-belt that connects it to the motor. If the belt is frayed or cracked, then you’ll need to have it replaced by a professional. However, if it is just mis-aligned, you can perform your own heating repair. Loosen the screws holding the motor in place, align the pulleys using a carpenter’s square, and then tighten the screws.

CLEAR THE AREA

Make sure that your chimney and outside vents are clear of debris such as leaves, nests and snow. This is very important, because blockages can result in the risk of carbon monoxide being pumped through your ducts.
