You probably never really think about your AC unit. It turns on, your home gets cool, then it turns off. No matter what kind of fancy new air conditioners exist, they all operate on that basic principle, right? So why would you go out of your way to look into AC replacement when your unit seems to work just fine?
While there are a lot of advantages to installing a brand new AC unit, a lot of those are nerdy industry-insider advantages. We’re not going to bore you with all that. Instead, these are four really obvious benefits any homeowner can expect when they have a new AC unit installed. If you think your AC is getting old or you just think it’s time for an upgrade, here are a few things to look forward to.
Higher Efficiency
A typical central air conditioning unit’s lifespan varies based on usage and local weather, but we’d estimate a quality model should last around 15 years. Unfortunately, however, many homes still have their original air conditioners installed, which may be much older than 15 years. Chances are they weren’t exactly the best units around in the first place, either.
Air conditioner design has improved significantly in the last 15 years. Your AC replacement could use 30 to 50% less energy than older models. Look for an Energy Star model conditioner to save even more power. The less power your AC consumes to do its job, the less strain it places on your home and your wallet.
Faster Cooling
Often, there’s a tradeoff between energy efficiency and output potential. Everyone suspects that one guy going 50 mph in the fast lane is trying to drive slowly to preserve his gas milage. Fortunately, that’s not the case with AC units at all. Not only are new units more efficient, they’re better at cooling quickly too. AC units work by cooling your home’s air until its temperature matches the thermostat setting.
When the air reaches the desired temperature, the AC unit stops operating until it’s needed again. New AC units reach their cooling temperature much faster. You get to enjoy comfortable, cool air faster, and your AC unit doesn’t run for as long per cycle.
Lower Energy Bills
Both improved energy efficiency or faster cooling help you save money. Higher efficiency means you’re using less power to achieve the desired result. Faster cooling means your AC replacement doesn’t have to run as long, so it’s not using power as often.

According to the US Energy Information Administration, the average Minnesotan spent $92.32 on power every month in 2015. 48% of $92.32 is $44.31. According to the US Department of Energy, new air conditioners can save you 20-40% on your home cooling costs. 30% of $44.31 is $13.29 a month, or $159.51 a year!
Parts and Labor Warranty
When you buy an AC replacement unit and/or have it installed, ask if the unit comes with a parts and labor warranty. If something goes wrong and your AC unit doesn’t work properly or breaks down, a warranty can cover the cost of repair.
