Broken Furnace?
It’s cold—and if your furnace isn’t working properly, it’s even colder. If you’re sitting in your home shivering, you’re likely considering the pros and cons of repairing versus replacing your furnace.
When to Repair:
The two main factors to take into consideration when your furnace breaks down are age and repair cost. Just like a car, the basic rule of thumb is that when the cost of the repair is more than 50% of the cost of a new furnace, you should replace it. However, as the furnace ages, it becomes more and more practical to replace rather than repair your furnace. For example, once a furnace is over 10 years old, we scarcely recommend sinking any more money into repair when a new furnace would recover the cost of these repairs in only months.
When to Replace:
The same two factors are in play as with making the repair decision—age and cost. The benefits to replacing your furnace, though, will recover the costs faster than repairing an inefficient machine. New furnaces are quieter, more efficient, and have an abundance of price points and rebate opportunities.
From a comfort standpoint, the electronically commutated motor (ECM) or direct drive, variable speed furnaces keep the fan on all the time for a lower cost than a traditional furnace. These furnaces reduce temperature fluctuations and save the owner money on their energy bill.
